Join the Labor Day Parade Monday in Wilmington
LOS ANGELES HARBOR --
August 29, 2008 --
No one needs to tell working people that this Labor
Day
marks a major turning point for America.
Here on the west coast, longshore workers are
discussing terms of a
proposed agreement with shippers while in Los
Angeles county over
350,000 workers -- including
700 warehouse workers in Lancaster --
are fighting for good jobs and
union contracts.
Since most of us won't be on the busses carrying
Barak Obama
and Joe Biden through Ohio, Pennsylvania and
Michigan
(while John McCain tries to remember when
he last bought gas),
we have an idea for how you can spend this Labor Day.
Join thousands of your Brothers and Sisters in
Wilmington,
California for the largest
Labor Day parade west of the Mississippi.
The Los Angeles Harbor Labor Coalition holds their
29th annual Labor Day
Solidarity March and Rally starting with the 10 am
parade
(route here) and winding up with a free
community BBQ and rally
in historic Banning Park.
And before the parade starts, catch the debut
performance of the ILWU's
newly-formed Southern California Marching
Drill Squad.
Inspired by the world-famous ILWU Local 10 Drill
Team (who will march in this year's parade), the
Southern California Marching Drill Squad will be the
face of the ILWU at community
and labor events across the southland.
The ILWU Southern California Marching Drill Squad
will give their first public performance at 9:00 outside
the ILWU Local 13 Dispatch Hall,
located at Broad and D Streets.
The delegates and officers of the ILWU Southern
California District Council wish you a safe and happy
celebration on Monday!

Smell a rat at Rite Aid?
It's been almost six months since
warehouse workers at the gigantic Rite Aid
distribution center in Lancaster voted to join the ILWU.
Since then, Rite Aid has discharged
54 workers and continued with the same sort of
harassment and intimidation that marked the
lead-up to the certification election. Hundreds of
supporters from across the southland
converged on Rite Aid this week to show support to
the 700 ILWU workers who are now bargaining
for their first union contract.
